YouTube – What is a Browser?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Asking  what is a browser reveals that actually people are happy to use whatever is on their machines. How does this affect design and user experience? This clip is showing the response in America but it was asked in several different countries and the responses were similar.

Apps and Hats (teaser episode 9)

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Wanted to post this teaser video here this time as well as on the apps and hats site. This episode features the clothing from Charlie Barker who is a young designer based where we are located in the North of England. She is very talented and her clothes were amazing! We will feature a blog post for her in the week coming up.

Local designer Charlie Barker designed and hand sewed the girls equestrian themed clothes in the next episode. Have the girls managed to find a good app category to review? Do they succeed in finding you those apps worthy of your download?

All that to find out and more!

Hope you tune in next week to A & H.

Web Video: Evolution

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Blip.tv’s CEO, Mike Hudack, chatted with Red Write Web about how online video and television are evolving and informing one another.

This is so topical with the statistics of how video bloging / video posting / and people creating their own shows are on the rise. Can TV last, will it need to make fundamental changes? Perhaps in addition to that do people need to think more about adding video to their sites, is this what the audience is expecting?

While Christine takes you through the delights that is Ocarina.  This app is $0.99 and she is ’singing’ it’s praises.

I think at one point she is almost off the couch with excitement over it! It’s getting heated in here folks~

Get that all important app made and send it to the girls, so they have even more apps to dress through!

This episode sees some country gents (our gals) getting comfortable on the couch, as they look into the entertainment category for iPhone apps.

EPISODE 4: SOCIAL NETWORKING (Facebook V Tweetie, Twitterfon…)

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Firstly apologies, we slightly over ran in this episode, I’m gonna blame Hattie (but truthfully, we wanted to briefly explain a new feature called ‘One More Byte’… you’ll see)

Well now girls, make your mind up! How many good apps are out there!

This episode takes the girls through the category Social Networking, where they look at the free apps Facebook, Twitterfon, Twitteriffic and the paid for app Tweetie.

Hattie thinks the Facebook app is actually better than the web interface of Facebook, but will that mean you spend more time on it? Christine just can’t seem to decide between all her Twitter applications (we think she uses far too many!).

Specifically she mentions TweetieTwitterfon and the free version of Twitteriffic. So many more apps are available, some that are specifically just for tweeting location or images. Some of them just list all the feeds from the trending topics or popular searches, or just for posting your tweets. There just wasn’t enough time to cover them all – really could do another show on it!

Still, hopefully by the end of this episode you will be far wiser to the Twitter apps, Facebook’s features and of course umm… fairy clothing?

Powerful Message

Friday, April 10th, 2009

It is worth watching this video through to the end.  It has a really powerful message, and that’s the only reason why I’m posting it here!

Episode 2: Games (Tap Tap Revenge 2 v RoboLogic)

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Games are featured in this weeks episode.

This week the girls are in their business suits, ready to tackle the serious subject of games! Their suits and hats may be serious but the topic seems to be so interesting that the girls find it hard to stop giggling!

C’mon girls, will you insist on being goofy every show? Will you ever wear Victorian clothing again? And most important, who’s game do you think rocks it the most in this fun episode?

They have each picked an application to review. Hattie has chosen a free application while Christine’s is paid for.

Note: This week has a special bonus, the game Christine reviews has offered the viewers a chance to nab their very own promo code for a free download of the paid for version! Get yourself  entered!

Episode 1: business (iTie v Presenter)

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Apps and Hats, the episodes will also be shown here on my personal blog. Hope you enjoy.

Episode 1: Business (iTie vs Presentor) from Christine Morris on Vimeo.

Business is the category chosen for you. (Don’t forget- have your say and suggest a category or game you want to include! )

Apps and HatsThis week the girls are in their Victorian splendor. Clothes straight out of ‘The Dancing Platform at Cremorne Gardens’ Painted by Phebus Levin in 1864. More on that in a later post! If only they had iPhones back in the Victorian times, I wonder what they would have Tweeted about….

They have each picked an application to review. Hattie has chosen a free application while Christine’s is paid for.

What ratings are they giving? Do the girls finally stop laughing? And do you agree with Christine or Hattie?

Apps and Hats

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I have been working on a project for a few weeks now, and last Sunday it all came together.  The idea is basically to have a video podcast which is an iPhone app review show.  We wanted a twist on it, and – well let me know, I think we have a twist!

This is the teaser that we released, before the launch of the project Friday March 20th 2009. I really hope you’ll watch us every other week, and send us some feedback – or clothing ideas!!

This won’t be posted here again, I have set up appsandhats.com where you can watch it every other week, or on the vimeo channel. Also it should be available to download as a podcast —> I say should because it doesn’t seem to support Vimeos format.  If anyone has tips on how I can get it working right please let me know. Thanks.

x enjoy

Educational Tool: Twitter

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

[First: BIG thanks to my CDC group Yr1 & YR2 for doing this session with me!!! Three cheers and sorry if I didn't include your pic or your tweet in the post.]

I wrote a post about Twitter and the integration of it as a learning resource and teaching device.  It can be a good source for research. Tying in with that is the notion of getting students to use technology to better understand it.

I decided to try some of the ‘Twitter in the Classroom’ techniques.  I set up an account called @interactivity, (that is actually the module title) but also our topic of discussion.

Ryan by Chris Landreth – NFB

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

This film, I show to students for several reasons.  The animation in it is amazing to watch, it completely keeps your attention by the detail and creativity shown.  In addition to that, they show the work of Canadian Animator Ryan Larkin, who had made beautiful and inspiring animations in the 1970s.  This film really allows you to see the differences in the animation techniques which – again for inspiration- is a great thing to demonstrate.  This is one of the few films that I have purchased, and on the DVD there is additional viewing material (making of, and other work by Chris). It is a film I hope you will go back to a view more than once, because you really get more from it every time you watch it.

Additional to that, is this story is sad. It’s an emotional film and the way emotions are shown even though its using technology is an amazing achievement. If you have a chance to also click the NFB link under the film you can see the work by Ryan on their site as well.

Ryan

Chris Landreth, 2004, 13 min 54 s

Information from The National Film Board site:
This Oscar®-winning animated short from Chris Landreth is based on the life of Ryan Larkin, a Canadian animator who, 30 years ago, produced some of the most influential animated films of his time. Ryan is living every artist’s worst nightmare – having lost his ability to create and succumbing to addiction, he panhandles on the streets to make ends meet. Through the use of computer-generated characters, Landreth interviews his friend and colleague in an effort to shed light on his downward spiral. Some strong language. Viewer discretion is advised.

Seth Godin’s advice on Mashable

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I try to post my opinion and advice or information that is not posted somewhere already, but when I came across this post from Andrew Warner (an Internet entrepreneur and the founder of Mixergy. He interviews successful people to learn how they did it) I had to include it.

Seth Godin is always worth a watch, this video is about 7 tips for a startups up in a down market.

Students are Animals…

Friday, February 6th, 2009

What happens when a classroom exercise (using online video services like Seesmic, Viddler, Vimeo, YouTube to convey a message…) becomes interesting to the students.

If they are studying about a technology they will get a much richer understanding and appreciation for it if they actually USE it.

I asked my students to use a service of their choice, offering them Seesmic, Viddler, Vimeo or YouTube,  but equally they could find one of their own, and see what the service offers.

This could have been a simple ‘write a report’ exercise, include a few screen captures *yawn* about how it works.  Instead, we decided to take advantage of the capabilities of the computers we are fortunate to have in the college (iMac with webcam)

I asked them to just post a question, or a comment, to stress, just ease into it.  At first most were shy, understandably, but once ‘DanceMatt’ (Matthew Meadowcroft) had taken center stage and really gone for it, the whole thing became far more relaxed.

Here is DanceMatts first attempt at using this communication tool.  He used the integrated camera on the iMac and YouTube to post it.  It was edited using iMove.

This submission followed, and remember all I had  asked for was a quick comment or question, just to get them into the idea. This was all created in the session!

Day at the Zoo – This is from Matt Godfrey, who filmed it with the same equipment, and also used iMovie. (be sure to have sound ON to appreciate this first attempt)

Getting the students using the technology is the best way for them to learn about it.  The errors made, the difficulties experienced when creating with it are all valuable.  It offers them so much more then simply attending a session where I speak about, or describe something to them.

Are you also using technology in your sessions, what is particularily motivational for them, what technologies do they use the most?
