Pinball Loving

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I have been a fan of pinball since I can remember being tall enough to reach the table (from a chair).  There is something so fantastic about the sound and dynamics of this game.  The un-predictable nature and the idea that maybe somehow if I hit the ball in a certain way at a certain speed I have control over it is magical.  I came across this fantastic article through a contact, and I was so pleased to see a tast of some of it’s origins and to read about this wonderful innovator Steve.

I had a friend, I’ll never forget her “Misty”, who was the main reason I was late for most of my time at Junior High School.  She had a pinball machine in her basement, and when her parents left for work, we unlocked the front door of the machine and rigged the change collector se we could play as many games as possible for no money.  It was bliss, even with all the detentions I ended up having!! Hope you enjoy this article as much as I did…

Sally’s Spa Review

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Sally's Spa Sally’s Spa $0.99 / £0.59 on sale at the moment. Publisher: Games Cafe

Sally's Spa Lite Link for the FREE version, with limited levels.

This is a time management game that is up there with the best of them. If you like the pressures of trying to satisfy all your customers and make a profit then this is a great game to play. And NO it is not just for girls, maybe you aren’t up for the challenge~

img_0719Sally has been on our devices before in the previous hit Sally’s Salon. That game earned her a deserved following. In addition to that, because the game was on other platforms, notably the DS, (but you can also play it on your computer) she seems unstoppable, which I’m happy about!

So, some good things about Sally’s Salon…
First look at the game you can see how games like these, from big developers, are so polished with their graphics. It is a slick interface, with very user intuitive controls. Sally herself is a real cutie and it was fun to be her in the salon.

The placement of the items in the game, with the waiting chairs at the back and then you move around the screen in an anti-clockwise way really makes great use of the screen size. The game packs a lot of things into that little screen yet manages to not look cramped or disorganized. A real credit to the developers.

Brighter Marketing – Review

Monday, February 9th, 2009

The Brighter Marketing Bible for Small Businesses – Siobhan Lees and Joanne Morley (Debbie Jenkins Editor) £14.97 from Amazon

Brighter Marketing Bible

I came across this book through a Twitter contact @Joanne_Morley.

I had read Joanne’s tweets over a period of time and I found myself going to the blog and reading the advice and posts there regularly.  They were full of information, but more importantly, it was useful information!

Then a tweet came through about the launch of the book ‘The Brighter Marketing Bible”.  When I saw that  I asked her if I could read a copy to review it.  This was actually for two reasons.

1- On Twitter I am finding a community of people who help and support each other in their work and interests, and I want to pay back this community with offering my own help and support out to them.

2 – The book looked fantastic and I really wanted to read it!

I did asked Joanne why this book was written and she described it as

“Regarding why we wrote the book, we just wanted to make marketing simple and easy to understand for SMEs and small businesses and give them the practical guidance they need.”

Which  describes what it does really well.  There is information in the book at the start so you can read about them  more in depth, explaining their backgrounds and where they are coming from. (more…)

Summizer – Review

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Improved Options SummizerDeveloper: Mustache
Price: £1.79
Version Reviewed: 1.2

iPhone integration rating 4/5
User Interface rating 5/5
Reuse / Replay value 4/5

I don’t need to tell you about the explosion of Twitter users at the moment. Some people are now using Twitter as an alternative to Google.  What Summizer is great at is helping you get through all the ‘chatter’ to find the information you want, and present it in an easy to understand order. (you can search or just browse)

Since the first version of this application was released they have listened to what their audience has asked for and added some very useful features.

This includes the ability to reply to users and the all important ability to ReTweet! The refreshed searches highlight the new found tweets in that search which is great and you can also launch the links in Safari with the inclusion of a button to the application. (more…)

The Voice and Nothing More: Review by David Berridge

THE VOICE AND NOTHING MORE: SIMON MORRIS AND ROB LAVERS

All images from Voice and Void, curated by Thomas Trummer, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (sep 16 2007 – Feb 24 2008). (ABOVE:) Christian Marclay, Double Doors (The Electric Chair), 2006. Private Collection. Courtesy Paula Cooper Gallery, New York.

At the Slade School of Art on Wednesday lunchtime, Simon Morris – writer, performer and publisher of Information as Material - was launching The Voice and Nothing More, a short festival of workshops, an exhibition and performances exploring the voice in contemporary art.

Befitting his role as scene setter, Morris read a text that seemed to outline different properties of the voice. I heard sections on laughing, crying, and female orgasm. Several times he screamed mightily into the microphone.  I say “seemed” because Morris shared the stage with the saxophonist Rob Lavers. Lavers used the saxophone as an extension of voice, or maybe his voice was an extension of the saxophone. He breathed, growled, shouted, blowed raspberries, hissed and much more. Sometimes voice alone, othertimes into the saxophone mouthpiece, which was sometimes joined to the instrument strung around his neck, sometimes not.

Other times the microphone was inside the bell of the sax. It expanded voice and instrument both. Oftentimes it seemed to expand beyond both. It lasted maybe twenty minutes – Morris talked of feeling, in this context, it should be the length of an academic presentation – prompting the fantastic thought of a panel session comprising three such pieces! It was a fantastic way to theoretically explore the subject of the voice whilst fully inhabiting its physicality  and potential.

Twitter – The Challenge

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Here is my self imposed challenge

to find *The Ultimate* Twitter Client, the breakdown…

THE BACKGROUND what the heck is Twitter?

Twitter, founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams was launched in July 2006. It is a social networking (and micro-blogging service) that allows users to post latest updates. Each update (or Tweet as its termed) is limited by 140 characters and can be posted these ways: web form, programs specifically designed to interact with Twitter, text message, or instant message. Some interesting user number information can be found at TechCrunch. Additionally this recent post found on Digg stated that “Micro-blogging service Twitter is gaining 5,000 to 10,000 new accounts a day and most of its users have joined this year (2008).” The full story on Psysorg can be read HERE.

THE WHY

When talking with friends and getting current information through Twitter, I find myself using several programs because they seem to have one or two features that I like. This is annoying. I want one application that meets all the requirements.  Is this really to much to ask?  I decided to make a list of things that I would like in the program, and then I am going to go through the list & map it out against what the program does.

THE WHAT

iPhone Screen

I will use each program for one week, during that week it will have the epic honour of going onto my Phone bar (see picture).

During that week I will not be using any other application. After that week I am going to post my review and opinions and then test the next application. Currently all the applications that I have planned to test are FREE from iTunes store.

There is only one paid for application, but this may change as my challenge continues.  (I am really hoping one already installed will do the trick!) (more…)

The Web this Week…

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Visited a lotta great links this week so I thought I’d write a post with a listing of them.

Mashable

The first one is about Microsoft’s new ‘notebook’ called ThumbTack basically a great tool for researchers (Mashable has a great article about it and the others, link above).  Currently Google Notebook seems to be at the top of the list, and there is EverNote and UberNote too (a long list of others) Along with that is the information that Microsoft Office will be preparing web versions of their software.  This article from the BBC explains the move.

Wired Blog on eyeborg

This is great -  Canadian filmmaker will be putting a camera in his eye, what an amazing idea! “Rob Spence looks you straight in the eye when he talks. So it’s a little unnerving to imagine that soon one of his hazel-green eyes will have a tiny wireless video camera in it that records your every move. ” from Wired Blog.

Eyeborg from WIRED (eyeborg.blogger.com)

Eyeborg from WIRED (eyeborg.blogger.com)

GiveReal

Turning virtual drinks into real ones Also from Mashable <—- review & information

Betavine

This next link was in a @ryancarson tweet, basically an open community for mobile application developers.  This link specifically to a great place to create widgets.

AwayFind

AwayFind basically acts as a web filter.  It is so you can choose which emails are vital and that you do want looking at quickly.  Could be a good solution if your the type of user who has alot of email to get through and just needs it prioritizing. Describe as “The online equivalent of having an administrative assistant screen your mail and only bother you for the important things.” by Web Worker Daily

Microvision

This is Microvision, purely cause I want one! (little projector that you can use with your iPhone)

Macrumors: Apple Patent

And lastly, this Patent released “revealing research that Apple had done in 2007 on many topics encompassing future versions of Mac OS X. The most intriguing is a series of patent applications which describe a “Multidimensional” user interface. Apple has essentially been working on true 3D desktop environments. ” from Macrumors

Apple patent application

Apple patent application

That last link, to the Apple Patent I had to include as it appeared yesterday, and just this week I had started the beta for BumpTop, so pretty topical.   (which is worth a look at, also watch amazing demonstration by Anand Agarawala at TED.

Ok, those are the links, that does seem to be a pretty huge list, but I loved them all for different reasons and thought they were worth a mention.

~ Hey – if you have any great links you’ve come across this week please post them for me, I’d love to check them out!

I had long long ago abandoned my Delicious account, and I’m not sure why.  The idea of having bookmarks follow you wherever you go can only be a good thing.  Of course, I find myself bookmarking pages that I don’t necessarily ever go back to.  That may be the problem. (more…)
