EXHIBITIONS : a perverse library York 2008
For the perverse library Morris and Thurston created an immersive textual environment, using local technologies of the institution, photocopiers and laser printers, to blow up quotations, bits of text, punctuation, images of poets etc.
The work is a textual version of Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwells’ visual collage at Noel Road in Islington, London. For material, Morris and Thurston mined their personal libraries, re-read and re-wrote books borrowed from the university library and other conference delegates.
The perverse library included a sonic intervention. Disrupting the quiet contemplative space of a traditional reading room, Morris and Thurston dj’d their way through the UBU archive for the duration of the event. Featured sound poetry included: Pavel Büchler's Live, On Kawara's One Million Years, Christian Bök's Eunoia, Charles Bernstein's 1-100, Kurt Schwitter's Ursonate, Joseph Beuys's Ja Ja Ja Ne Ne Ne etc.
