BIBLIOMANIA: A SPATIAL CULTURE BIBLIOGRAPHY
'The present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space. We are in the
epoch of simultaneity: we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of the
near and far, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed. We are at a moment, I believe,
when our experience of the world is less that of a long life developing through
time than of a network that connects points and intersects with its own skein.'
-Michel Foucault
The following people were invited by Paul O'Neill to contribute to a compilation
of reading material that would collectively represent; "A Spatial Culture
Bibliography".
Paul Antick, Monica Blake, Sarah Chaplin, Barry Curtis, Sheila Jolly, Elizabeth Lebas, Yen-Yu Liu, Sandy McCreery, Bernard MacAteer, Aoife MacNamara, Simon Ofield, Paul O'Neill, Paul Overy, Haecheon Park, Adrian Rifkin, Laura Ruggeri, Anna Steiner; collectively the Tutors, Lecturers and Students from M.A Spatial Culture at Middlesex University, London.
Each person was requested to construct a reading list/bibliography of the essential textual material, that most effectively represents "A Spatial Culture", or a specific aspect of a spatial discourse. The resulting bibliography aims to portray the issues of space and it's place in contemporary critical culture. The notion of bibliography and what is contained within was very much open to each person's creative interpretations. The hope is to give, both an expansive and detailed overview of the extent of related literature on the discourse of "space" and it's ramifications within the wider field of cultural srtudies. "If there was a section in every bookshop or library, entitled; SPACE: SPATIAL CULTURE, what books would be in it?".
The listed books contained on the collective bibliography, should eventually be displayed on a single bookshelf. They should be arranged from left to right and ordered by the measure of the amount of cubic space, that each book occupies. The largest book should be on the furthest left position, whilst the smallest should be on the furthest right. In the case of two books being of the same scale, they should then be arranged in alphabetical order of firstly, author and then title. In the case of duplications on the bibliographies, there should be multiple copies displayed and in the case of a lack of availability of a particular copy of a published book, the most recent and widely available copy, should be supplied.
